Brisbane With Kids
Brisbane family activities from a family who lives here, South Bank, Mount Coot-tha, the Cultural Precinct, and the day trips worth the drive.
LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
Our home base
Brisbane is our home base, so this hub runs deeper than a visitor’s guide. We’ve tested Brisbane family activities across every season, from free riverside spots to bushland walks, and we update it as our own daughter grows into new things the city has to offer.
With the 2032 Olympics on the horizon, Brisbane is only going to get more interesting for travelling families, and we’re building this guide as that story unfolds.
Really Traveling Family is the winner of the Key to South Bank Award, South Bank Corporation, 2026, see the official announcement, LinkedIn, or Instagram.

Free lagoons, riverside parkland, and a short walk from most CBD accommodation, the most toddler friendly stretch in the city.
BEYOND THE CITY
Day trips from Brisbane
Brisbane sits within easy reach of two of our other guides, plus longer options for families ready to go further.
Brisbane and the 2032 Olympic Games
We’re building Brisbane 2032 family travel coverage now, well ahead of the surge in search interest expected closer to the Games. Families planning early will find this section growing over the next few years as venues and logistics become clearer.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Brisbane with kids, answered
1
What are the best free things to do in Brisbane with kids?
South Bank’s free lagoons and Roma Street Parklands are the two easiest free stops, both walkable from the CBD and well shaded for hot days.
2
Is Brisbane a good base for a family trip to Queensland?
Yes. Brisbane sits within an hour or two of both the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, making it a workable base for families who want a city stay with easy beach day trips.
3
How is Brisbane preparing for the 2032 Olympics as a family destination?
Planning is still early, but infrastructure and venue announcements are worth tracking now if you’re considering a Brisbane trip anywhere near the Games. The good news is families don’t need to wait for 2032: Brisbane already has world-class facilities in place, free riverside lagoons and parkland at South Bank, the Botanic Gardens and lookout at Mount Coot-tha, free children’s programming at GOMA, and pram friendly green space at Roma Street Parklands, all an easy walk or short drive from the CBD.
4
Is public transport in Brisbane good for families?
Yes, and it’s excellent value. Queensland’s 50 cent flat fare is now permanent across all Translink buses, trains, ferries and trams, so getting the family between South Bank, the CBD, and most attractions costs next to nothing regardless of distance. All public transport is pram accessible, so you won’t need to worry about lifting a pram on and off, and staff are consistently helpful if you need a hand or directions. Plan your route on the Translink journey planner before you head out.
